How Relevant Is the Millennium Project?

We’ve all heard quite a bit about the Millennium Project, in fact, I even have a book on it. Still, many ask; what is it really all about, and is this project making any progress? Well, I’ve looked into this and believe that it really isn’t, but the group is quite proud of themselves and quick to take credit for all the good in the world, things which are occurring naturally, due to capitalism, or just due to new technologies and recent innovative methods. Let me explain.

You see, not long ago I was reading an article in “The Futurist” – I believe it was the November-December 2011 magazine. Anyway, there was a very interesting article titled “Updating the Global Scorecard: The 2011 State of the Future,” by Jerome C. Glenn. In the article there was a very interesting scorecard and chart of how The Millennium Project was doing, specifically where they were winning, and where they were losing.

In reading through this chart as well as scanning the article I felt as if the Millennium Project wasn’t needed at all, rather it was nothing more than an attempt to promote AGW or Global Warming Theory, with a rather strong call for action. In the column of “Where We Are Losing” were six items; CO2 emissions, global surface temperature anomalies, percentage of people voting in elections, corruption in the 15 largest countries, number of people killed in terrorist attacks, and the number of refugees per 100,000 of a population.

The first two items are obviously having to do with global warming, and of course they want to keep everyone interested in the project by bringing those issues to the forefront. Still, I’m not impressed, nor am I amused. Because on the positive side of the chart agricultural yields are up, and the percentage of people without clean water to drink is down. It seems that human populations are doing quite well. Life expectancy is up, infant mortality is down, diseases down, HIV is down, population is stabilizing, poverty is down, and overall things are pretty darn good.

Next, the number of people voting in elections is down, but that could be because people are happy with their government, and they’ve become lethargic, and no need to vote because they are happy with what’s going on. Just because people aren’t voting isn’t necessarily because they don’t think it doesn’t do any good. I’d also like to point out the recent elections in Tunisia after the fall of that government, the election had a 90% turnout, which goes totally against what is in this report, too bad they didn’t wait a couple days to print it.

Next, the report says that corruption is up in the 15 largest countries, however, there is more and more transparency each day, and more information on the Internet, and more exposure to corruption. I don’t feel there is more corruption, I feel there is more reporting of corruption due to the notoriety of whistleblowers on the Internet, and due to organizations like wiki leaks, which draws in the whistleblower mentality.

Now then, I ask how the Millennium Project plans on decreasing the number of people killed by terrorists, or the number of refugees in the world? And lastly, it seems that the folks that run the Millennium Project are often against the efforts of the United States, yet we are the ones leading the charge against the terrorists.

Just because a bunch of academics get together and put out a report, one which serves their agenda and their mindset doesn’t mean they aren’t using misleading data, proving themselves right, and avoiding their skeptics, and political opposition’s peer review. funding of information technology institutes by the government as well as private sector
partnering with developed nations by encouraging exchange programs mostly at the tertiary institution level increased funding in medical researches and other IT based medical programs
The agricultural sector should experience an increment in funding of all its programs most especially IT based researches so as to report a massive output in production for local consumption as well as export.

The menace faced by the continent as a result of hunger and poverty, HIV/AIDS pandemic, depletion of renewable energy and resources etc, can be addressed as stated below if information Technology can be enhanced in every facet of our economy and the general polity.
